JOHN DERIAN FURNITURE COLLECTION

The Collection: John Derians furniture collection includes five pieces: two sofas, one loveseat, a chair and a long tufted bench. The Cove sofa and the Geranium sofa are inspired by Sheraton- and Hepplewhite-style antiques (respectively). Sheraton and Hepplewhite were two major furniture designers (primarily cabinetmakers) of the 18th century into the early 19th century. Both styles are characterized by their clean, often square lines and a general grace and simplicity. While these two sofas have similarly square silhouettes, the Cove sofa is deeper and lower with no casters on the legs, while the more upright Geranium sofa has a leaner, straighter look. The Geranium sofa has casters on the turned-wood front legs and none on the back legs. The Fritillaria chair is based on an original Napoleon III-style pair of chairs that John now owns. Napoleon III was the nephew of the Napoleon that we are all familiar with. This style dates from the mid- to late 19th century, France. This chair has casters on all legs and is low and deep with classic lines and proportions. The Dromedary loveseat and the nine-foot long tufted Field Bench are harder to place as far as style and period. One thinks of camel-back furniture as having one hump in the middle. Ours is the reverse a dip in the middle with a hump on each side. The Field Bench is oversized, dramatic, great for lounging, a good solution for dividing a large space and even a good potential guest bed.
